Camilla loved evenings more than any other time of day. When the sun dipped low and the sky turned soft shades of purple and gold, she would run into the fields behind her house with a small glass jar in her hands. Fireflies blinked gently in the tall grass, glowing like tiny stars. Camilla chased them with quiet excitement, careful not to hurt them, catching only a few before letting them go again. She liked the feeling of holding light, even if just for a moment.
Her grandmother used to say, Light is not something you keep, Camilla. It is something you respect. Camilla didn’t fully understand those words, but she remembered them every time she held her jar close.
One evening, Camilla noticed something unusual. Among the flickering lights was a glow that didn’t blink at all. It was soft, steady, and almost magical. Curious, she moved closer, her steps slow and careful. Without thinking much, she cupped her hands and gently caught it, placing it inside her jar.
When she looked closer, her breath caught. Inside was not a firefly, but a tiny figure with delicate wings that shimmered like glass. The little being moved, stretched, and then looked up at her. Camilla froze in shock.
Well, the tiny creature said in a soft, musical voice, this is new.
Camilla quickly opened the jar. I’m so sorry! I thought you were a firefly! she said, her voice trembling.
The tiny being floated out, stretching her wings. That happens more often than you’d think, she said gently. My name is Luma.
I’m Camilla, she replied, still unsure if she was dreaming.
Luma studied her for a moment, then smiled. You’re kind, she said. You let me go, even when you didn’t understand what I was.
From that day on, Luma began to visit Camilla. She didn’t appear all the time, but always when Camilla needed her most. Her help was never loud or grand. Instead, it came in quiet, simple ways.
When Camilla struggled with her schoolwork and felt like giving up, Luma would sit beside her, glowing softly, reminding her to take things one step at a time. Somehow, Camilla always felt calmer when she did.
When Camilla argued with her friends and didn’t know how to fix things, Luma would gently remind her that being kind mattered more than being right. Camilla would think about it, take a breath, and find the courage to make things better.
Even on days when nothing seemed wrong but everything felt heavy, Luma stayed close. She didn’t always speak. Sometimes her quiet presence was enough to comfort Camilla.
One evening, Camilla asked, Why do you help me, even in such small moments?
Luma smiled softly. Because those moments are not small, she said. They are the ones that shape your heart.
As time passed, the warm evenings began to fade. The air grew cooler, and the fireflies appeared less often. Camilla felt the change, even before Luma spoke.
One quiet night, under a sky full of stars, Luma hovered gently in front of her. Her glow was softer now.
It’s time for me to go, Luma said.
Camilla’s heart felt heavy. Will I see you again? she asked.
Luma shook her head gently, still smiling. You may not see me, she said, but you will feel me. In every kind choice, every brave step, I will be there.
Camilla nodded, her eyes filled with tears.
Luma slowly rose into the night sky, her light fading until she looked just like another star. Camilla stood there quietly, holding her jar.
This time, she didn’t try to catch anything.
Because now she understood that some light is not meant to be held, but carried within.
