SHILLONG, April 27: The Pynursla Civil Sub-Division administration has issued a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), restricting the weight of vehicles crossing the Dawki Bridge to a maximum of 9 metric tonnes.
The order, issued by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Gautam Warjri, follows reports from the PWD (Roads) Pynursla Sub-Division regarding the bridge’s declining load-bearing capacity. Authorities warned that any vehicle carrying boulders or goods exceeding the 9-tonne limit will face strict action under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The directive noted that despite similar prohibitory orders in 2019 and 2024, trucks have continued to carry loads well beyond the permissible limit. The administration cautioned that unchecked overloading could lead to a structural collapse, disrupting connectivity and endangering lives.
“In order to prevent further deterioration of the bridge and ensure public safety, this order has been enforced with immediate effect,” the magistrate stated.
Due to the urgency of the situation, the ex-parte order has been enforced across the entire Pynursla Civil Sub-Division and will remain in effect until further notice.
