Aaranyak-Kirloskar Brothers complements rhino protection in Pobitora WLS

Guwahati, April 28: Leading biodiversity conservation organisation Aaranyak (www.aaranyak.org), through its Rhino Research and Conservation Division (RRCD), provided some essential field equipment to the forest staff of rhino abode of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary of Assam on April 25 last.

The initiative included the distribution of 25 water filters and 50 rechargeable torch lights aimed at improving the working conditions and safety of frontline forest personnel engaged the protection of the treasure trove of Greater One-horned Rhinoceros of the sanctuary.

The rechargeable torch lights were supported by Kirloskar Brothers Limited, highlighting a meaningful partnership between the prominent corporate entity and Aaranyak in supporting on-ground wildlife conservation efforts.

The items were formally handed over by Dr. Deba Kumar Dutta, Deputy Director of Rhino Research and Conservation Division of Aaranyak, in presence of Ujjal Choudhary, Range Officer of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, along with forest staff. The initiative was coordinated by Ujjal Bayan, Researcher, RRCD with the assistance of Aaranyak staff Rupak Das.

Range Officer Ujjal Choudhary expressed his appreciation for the initiative, stating that such support directly enhances the operational capabilities of forest staff. “Our personnel are engaged in round-the-clock monitoring and protection of wildlife, often in difficult terrain and unpredictable conditions. These provisions will greatly aid in improving both efficiency and safety in the field,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Dutta emphasised the importance of ensuring basic amenities and reliable equipment for forest personnel who work under challenging and often remote conditions. “Access to safe drinking water is fundamental for maintaining the health and efficiency of staff stationed in forest camps, where such facilities are often limited. Water filters will significantly reduce the risk of waterborne diseases and ensure sustained well-being,” he noted.

He further added that rechargeable torch lights play a vital role in night patrolling, anti-poaching operations, and emergency response situations. Unlike conventional battery-operated torches, rechargeable units are more sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly, ensuring uninterrupted service in areas with limited access to electricity.
