Athletic meet gets under way at Teilang playground

Khliehriat, April 29: The three-day District Level Inter School Athletic Meet 2026 got off to an energetic start at Teilang Playground, Dkhiah West, with young athletes from across East Jaintia Hills competing fiercely in a range of track and field events on the opening day.
Organised by the Office of the District Sports Officer, East Jaintia Hills, the annual meet has brought together more than 30 schools, making it one of the district’s biggest school sporting events aimed at identifying and encouraging young talent.
The opening ceremony was attended by District School Education Officer (DSEO) R Diengdoh, District Sports Officer (DSO) Stephanie M Rapsang, along with principals, teachers and students. Addressing the gathering, Diengdoh stressed the importance of sports in shaping discipline, teamwork and strong character among students. He urged the participants to compete with dedication while maintaining the true spirit of sportsmanship.
He highlighted that struggle and hard work remain the strongest tools for achieving success and reminded the athletes that participation itself carries great value, regardless of the final result.
He also encouraged students to respect their opponents, dream big and stay committed to their chosen paths both in sports and in life.
The first day witnessed exciting performances across several field events, with athletes putting in strong efforts to secure top honours for their respective schools. Among the standout performers, Samjana Phawa claimed victory in the Under-18 Girls Long Jump, while Reform Dkhar emerged on top in the Under-16 Boys Shot Put event.
Teibokmi Pdein impressed in the Under-18 Boys High Jump by securing first place, while Smiling Dkhar showcased her strength and technique to win the Under-16 Girls Javelin throw.
In the Under-18 Girls Javelin event, Sathi Phawa delivered a notable performance to finish at the top of the podium.
With two more days of competition remaining, the athletic meet is expected to witness even more intense contests as young athletes continue their pursuit of medals and district glory.
