GUWAHATI, April 30: The Kuki Christian Leaders’ Forum (KCLF) has expressed grave concern over the escalating tension and violence between sections of Kuki and Tangkhul communities in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts of Manipur.
Appealing for peace and unity in the midst of emerging tension between the hill tribes of Manipur, the Forum urged the authority concerned to speed up investigation of the cases that has led to the escalation of violence.
“It is most unfortunate that a misunderstanding between a few individuals at Litan village, a local issue, has been allowed to escalate to this level of violence. At a time when Manipur has already suffered immense pain from prolonged conflict, it is heartbreaking to witness another wave of division emerging among communities that have worshipped the same God, read the same scriptures, and professed the same gospel of peace,” the KCLF said in a statement.
“The violence and hostilities have already resulted in loss of innocent lives, destruction of homes and properties, and growing fear and trauma among affected communities. We strongly condemn all forms of violence and urge an immediate cessation of hostilities to prevent further bloodshed and suffering,” the forum said.
“The Kuki and Tangkhul communities in the region share deep historical, social and spiritual ties. We must not allow fear, anger or manipulation by vested interests to turn brothers and sisters into enemies.
We appeal to like-minded, peace-loving members of both the communities to work together to stop the violence immediately, knowing the common challenges we are facing as minority tribal Christians,” it said.
The Forum further called upon all members of the public to refrain from spreading rumours, false narratives and inflammatory messages, whether through social media, public discourse or other means.
“Misinformation has led to much harm already, and it has the power to inflame more tensions and violence. Let us reject words that divide and instead choose truth, compassion and responsible dialogue,” it said.
