Shillong, April 30: In a notable achievement for the state’s climbing fraternity, B. Kyrmenskhem Lyngdoh of Upper Lumparing successfully completed the prestigious Basic Mountaineering Course at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling.
A student of Shillong College, Lyngdoh underwent the intensive course (Sl. No. 374) from April 1 to 28, 2025, under the sponsorship of the Directorate General of Assam Rifles, Laitkor. His performance during the training stood out, as he clinched first place in the sport climbing competition, underlining his technical prowess and composure on the wall.
Adding to his accomplishment, Lyngdoh also summited Mt. Renok (5,025 metres) as part of the course’s height-gaining exercise—an essential component designed to test endurance, adaptability and mental strength in high-altitude conditions.
The graduation ceremony, held on April 28, 2026, marked the culmination of weeks of rigorous training in the demanding terrain of the Himalayas. For the trainees, it was more than just a formal conclusion—it was a significant step into the world of mountaineering.
The course offered extensive training in key disciplines such as rock climbing, ice craft, route navigation and survival techniques in extreme environments. Beyond the technical aspects, participants were also imbued with qualities of resilience, teamwork and self-belief—traits essential for any mountaineer.
