SHILLONG, April 30: In a major breakthrough, Meghalaya Police, with assistance from Haryana Police, arrested one accused, identified as Irsad alias Rumi, 32, of Mewat, Haryana, from Tauru in Haryana in connection with a case involving theft of Rs 9,57,900 from an HDFC ATM at Wapung in East Jaintia Hills on April 14.
Police said he is part of a criminal gang from Mewat that has been involved in ATM theft cases across East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, East Jaintia Hills, and North Garo Hills.
Other identified members of the gang have already been arrested in connection with Umiam Police Station Case No. 20(04)2026. The case appears to be part of a wider interstate crackdown on organised ATM theft networks operating in Meghalaya.
