SHILLONG, May 2: Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Janu Balas Momin, on Friday called for a healthcare system centered on compassion and equity during the 24th Scientific Conference-cum-General Body Meeting of the Meghalaya Medical Services Association (MMSA).
Addressing the gathering, Dr Momin said the conference provided an opportunity for medical professionals to address emerging challenges and reaffirm their commitment to improving healthcare delivery across the state.
Highlighting departmental achievements, the DHS noted that several facilities have recently secured quality certification under the National Quality Standards framework. This includes seven district hospitals, two Community Health Centres (CHCs), and 30 Primary Health Centres (PHCs). Furthermore, four facilities were recognised under the MUSQAN and LaQshya initiatives, while one district hospital and five PHCs received bronze certification.
Dr Momin also noted efforts to strengthen institutional capacity through leadership and administrative training for medical officers, including the start of induction training for new recruits.
Speaking on the conference theme, “Compassion Embedded in the Heart of Healing,” she said that while technology and policy improve efficiency, true healing occurs through human connection. She urged doctors to respond to patients with empathy and humility, ensuring care remains accessible to all citizens regardless of their location.
During the general body meeting, Dr Liza Kharmuti was elected president of the MMSA State Executive Committee, and Dr R Pohsnem was elected general secretary.
