SHILLONG, May 2: District and Sessions Judge DR Kharbteng inaugurated a Legal Services Clinic at the Zila Sainik Board, East Khasi Hills, recently to provide legal assistance to ex-servicemen and their families.
Kharbteng stated that the initiative follows the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) mandate to establish clinics in public spaces, including villages, jails, and community centres.
She noted that the District Legal Services Authority has already set up such facilities in correctional homes and schools, and this new clinic marks a further expansion of outreach.
The clinic will serve beneficiaries from seven districts under the Board’s jurisdiction. Services, including legal advice and documentation assistance, will be provided by legal aid counsel and trained paralegal volunteers who may also accompany beneficiaries to government offices when necessary.
Kharbteng highlighted that the clinic will address pension-related matters, service grievances, and other legal challenges. “This facility will ensure that those in need of legal support are guided appropriately and connected to legal aid lawyers whenever required,” she said.
Zila Sainik Welfare Officer Lt. Col. (Retd) Sebastian Marbaniang said the office currently caters to over 2,000 registered ex-servicemen and approximately 6,000 dependents across Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills, and Ri-Bhoi. He added that the Board acts as a link between beneficiaries and various record offices, including Pension Disbursing Authorities.
Welcoming the clinic, Marbaniang also noted the launch of the NALSA Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana 2025, stating that such initiatives are essential for providing timely legal support to personnel who may find it difficult to access services due to their postings.
