Four cops killed as IED goes off during demining operation
Kanker, May 2: Four police personnel, including an inspector of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), were killed after an IED went off while they were trying to neutralise it during a demining operation in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district on Saturday, police said. This was the first blast incident linked to Naxalite activity in the state since it was declared free from armed Maoism on March 31. It was also the first instance this year in which security personnel engaged in anti-Naxal operations have lost their lives. (PTI)
Youth from Andhra dies by suicide in US
Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh), May 2: A 26-year-old youth from this district has died allegedly by suicide in Chicago, US, recently, due to distress over debt, sources said on Saturday. The family members of the deceased have requested that the identity of their relative be withheld, noting that his parents are senior citizens suffering from medical conditions. Reacting to the incident, Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh expressed condolences and assured assistance for the repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased. (PTI)
4 workers buried under coal slurry in Jharkhand
Dhanbad, May 2: At least four workers died after being buried under coal slurry in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district on Saturday, a police official said. The incident took place at Moonidih coal washery in the command area of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL). “Bodies of all four workers were dug out of debris during a rescue operation”. (PTI)
Man takes gunshot to chest during b’day celebration
Gurugram, May 2: A young man sustained a gunshot wound to the chest after a firearm allegedly went off accidently while he was celebrating his birthday at a farmhouse in Bhondsi here, police said on Saturday. The injured is currently out of danger and being treated at a private hospital, they said, adding that an FIR has been registered in this connection. According to the police, Chikesh Dahiya (26), a resident of Dhanwapur village, was at a farm house to celebrate his birthday on Friday night, and was about to take a dip in the swimming pool along with his friends. While Chikesh was undressing, his friend Bunty, a resident of Khandsa village, took out his licensed revolver and placed it on the table. It is being said that the revolver went off suddenly, and the bullet struck Chikesh in the chest. (PTI)
Boy drowns in well in Beed
Beed, May 2: A 14-year-old boy drowned in a well while learning to swim in Kaij tehsil in Beed district, a police official said on Saturday. The incident took place at a farm plot in Pimpalgaon on Thursday afternoon, he added. His school headmaster Akash Dhakne said a proposal will be submitted to the primary education officer under the Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi Student Insurance Scheme for compensation of Rs 75,000 to the deceased’s kin.
