SHILLONG, May 6: Amidst repeated claims by the Meghalaya Police that the banned HNLC was a spent force, the outfit seems to be actively carrying out extortion activities in Shillong.
As per reports, the proscribed group has allegedly distributed extortion notices to shopkeepers and businessmen in the capital through WhatsApp, directing them to pay what the HNLC describes as “income tax”.
The shopkeepers have been given a timeframe to pay the “income tax” running into lakhs of rupees, and have been threatened with action over non-compliance.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said no FIR has been filed with regard to the extortion drive by the HNLC.
He, however, admitted that police had information about these WhatsApp-based extortion demands.
