SHILLONG, May 6: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC) on Wednesday condemned the authorities’ failure to address the escalating stray dog menace in Shillong, labeling it a critical public safety threat.
MPMC president Joplyn Scott Shylla stated that the issue has transitioned from a manageable concern to a source of daily fear for residents. She noted that packs of stray dogs are roaming city streets, chasing morning walkers and joggers, and attacking leashed pets.
“Citizens are living in fear while stepping out of their homes. This is absolutely unacceptable,” Shylla said. She alleged that continued negligence by the government and relevant departments has allowed the situation to spiral out of control.
Shylla argued that the crisis has moved beyond animal welfare to become a “law and order and public safety issue,” particularly affecting women, children, and senior citizens.
The MPMC has demanded immediate, time-bound intervention from the government. Recommended measures include large-scale sterilisation and vaccination drives, as well as regular monitoring of vulnerable areas such as Laitumkhrah and other affected localities.
Shylla warned that if the government remains indifferent, the MPMC will launch public protests. “The people of Shillong will not remain silent while their safety is ignored,” she said.
