NEW DELHI, May 11: The two-day event “Ever Living Meghalaya: Echoes of the Past, Voices of Today” concluded on Monday night with a focus on Garo culture and literature.
Prof (Dr) Barbara S Sangma of Captain Williamson Sangma State University spoke on the distinct features of Garo society. She explained that while the community is matrilineal, like the Khasi and Jaintia tribes, it maintains a patriarchal structure in external dealings. Dr. Sangma, a Nokma, also highlighted the importance of oral traditions.
Storyteller and counselor Jemimah Marak followed with an interactive session on mental well-being and creative expression. Marak, who serves as a consultant for NIFT Shillong and is a member of the State Women’s Commission, engaged the audience with live storytelling. The programme was organised by “Meghalayan Age – The Store.” The event featured traditional material culture, incorporating black clay pottery, bamboo, cane, wood, and textiles to reflect the heritage and traditional practices of the region.
