SHILLONG, May 11: The FKJGP Riwar Mihngi Circle and the KSU South Central East Circle have proposed a temporary traffic regulation on the Shillong-Dawki road to expedite restoration work. Under the proposal, the road would remain open for four days and close for three days to ensure faster and safer clearance. The suggestion followed a joint inspection on Monday of the Laitlyngkot-Mawlieh stretch, which included officials from the Pynursla Civil Sub-Division, the PWD, and representatives of the implementing firm, YFC Project Pvt. Ltd. – ACE Construction (JV).
The inspection assessed the road condition at Laitkynsew, where a landslide recently disrupted traffic. FKJGP Riwar Mihngi Circle president E Khonglam said the organisations suggested keeping the road open on market days in Pynursla, Lyngkhat, and Dawki,
while using the remaining days for uninterrupted restoration work.
Khonglam urged residents to cooperate with the arrangement, warning that immediate action is necessary before the monsoon intensifies. He noted that if work is delayed, heavy rainfall could lead to a prolonged closure of the road for over a month.
During the inspection, the organisations expressed concern over loose boulders and unstable earth along the stretch, which pose a threat to commuters. They urged the contractor to clear the debris immediately.
According to Khonglam, the construction firm stated that it would require at least 15 days to complete the clearance. He pointed out that the affected slope lacks vegetation, making the loose soil highly vulnerable to further movement.
However, the Pynursla BDO informed the organisations that any decision regarding temporary traffic restrictions would require approval from higher authorities.
