The 166.8 km road will pass through four districts and reduce travel time between Meghalaya and Barak Valley

SHILLONG, May 11: Former Cabinet minister and Khliehriat MLA, Kyrmen Shylla, said that the proposed high-speed economic corridor planned from Meghalaya to Assam will be a blessing for East Jaintia Hills and the other districts through which it will pass.
The proposed high-speed four-lane corridor will pass through Ri-Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, West and East Jaintia Hills districts before terminating in Assam.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had approved the proposal last year for the development, maintenance, and management of a four-lane Greenfield Access Controlled 166.8 km of National Highway No. 06 from Mawlyngkhung (near Shillong) in Meghalaya to Panchgram (near Silchar) in Assam on Hybrid Annuity Mode as an access-controlled Greenfield High-Speed Corridor at a total capital cost of Rs 22,864 crore. Of the total project length of 166.8 km, 144.8 km lies in Meghalaya, while 22 km falls in Assam.
Shylla said that the road would reduce travel time and bring major changes, as the existing road is narrow.
He also said that the government should ensure that landowners who part with their land for the project are compensated fully.
The proposed Greenfield high-speed corridor will improve the speed and ease of traffic movement between Guwahati and Silchar. The development of this corridor will improve the connectivity to Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and the Barak Valley region of Assam from Guwahati, with substantially reduced travel distance and travel time. This will enhance the nation’s logistics efficiency.
The corridor will improve connectivity between Assam and Meghalaya and boost economic development, as it will run through Meghalaya’s cement and coal production areas. This corridor will cater to national and international tourists coming from the well-connected Guwahati Airport, Shillong Airport, and Silchar Airport (via the existing NH-06).
