SHILLONG, May 11: Former Cabinet Minister and UDP leader Kyrmen Shylla has asserted that the political party which firmly commits to and successfully lifts the ban on coal mining will hold a decisive edge in the 2028 Assembly elections.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Shylla highlighted the severe hardship faced by people in East Jaintia Hills due to the 12-year-long ban on coal mining. He said residents of the region are desperate for justice and are ready to back any party that delivers on lifting the ban.
“We have been patient long enough. This time, we will fight for our rights. The party that gives a clear commitment and actually delivers on resuming coal mining will make a major impact in the 2028 Assembly polls,” Shylla said.
While appreciating the overall development initiatives in the state, Shylla stressed that people in East Jaintia Hills need sustainable livelihood, which is heavily dependent on coal mining.
