KABUL, May 12: The United Nations has warned that hunger and food insecurity are worsening in Afghanistan, with women and children most affected amid ongoing economic and humanitarian crises. UN agencies say the country faces overlapping challenges, including economic collapse, unemployment, climate shocks, and rising regional tensions that are driving up food prices and deepening hardship.
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said funding cuts have reduced supplies of specialised nutritional food needed to treat malnourished women and children, warning that millions of children are at risk of severe hunger. It urged continued international support to prevent further deterioration.
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reported that floods in Nangarhar have affected about 2,000 families, destroying homes and farmland. Relief efforts are ongoing, with further aid planned for affected areas in Nangarhar, Laghman, and Kunar. Humanitarian agencies warn that extreme weather is worsening Afghanistan’s already severe poverty and displacement crisis. (IANS)
