Headman, VDP accused of beating man to death; EKH police register murder case

SHILLONG, May 14: The East Khasi Hills Police have registered a murder case after a man from Pynter village accused the village headman, Fullmoon Khongsdoh, and Village Defence Party (VDP) members of beating his son to death.
The complainant lodged a Zero FIR on May 5, stating that his son was assaulted on the night of April 7 at the village Dorbar Hall. The body was brought home the next morning wrapped in a sack and buried on April 9 without allowing the family to open the coffin, see the face or perform final rites. Villagers had initially claimed the death was due to consuming poisonous insects.
The case came to light after a 59-second video showing the assault circulated widely on social media. The father alleged he approached the police only after watching the video.
Police have confirmed a murder case has been registered and an investigation is under way. The court has permitted exhumation of the body, with the procedure date to be fixed soon. The accused have reportedly secured anticipatory bail, police informed.
