SHILLONG, May 16: Former Phulbari legislator SG Esmatur Mominin, whose surrender in Ri-Bhoi last month ended a high-profile police search, was granted bail by a Tura court on Friday. The release comes with strict conditions regarding his alleged role in the law and order disturbances that broke out ahead of the GHADC elections.
Sessions Judge AM Ripnar granted bail on a bond of Rs 80,000 with two sureties of the same amount, to be executed before the JMFC, Phulbari Circuit Court.
The court directed Mominin to appear before the Investigating Officer whenever required and to attend all court proceedings if a chargesheet is filed. Under the bail conditions, he is prohibited from tampering with evidence, influencing witnesses, or contacting the complainants. He is also barred from leaving the jurisdiction without prior permission.
The case involves two FIRs lodged against Mominin by Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma and former South Tura MLA John Leslee Sangma.
Mominin had surrendered to police at Nongpoh in Ri-Bhoi district on April 13, choosing to turn himself in hundreds of kilometers away from the volatile situation in the Garo Hills. His surrender followed a period of significant unrest and electoral instability linked to the GHADC polls.
