SHILLONG, May 16: Dismissing rampant speculation of an immediate jump to the BJP or a “homecoming” to the Congress, insiders close to Dr Mukul Sangma say the veteran leader has adopted a tactical “freeze” on his political future, opting to wait until next year to decide which banner he will carry into the next assembly election.
The prolonged silence from the state’s most formidable challenger comes as a blow to a primary opposition already struggling for momentum. While rumours have long circulated regarding his return to the Congress or a shift to the saffron fold, a more startling theory has recently emerged: a potential alignment with his arch-rivals, the National People’s Party (NPP).
“He is currently quiet and has not made up his mind. Any major decision will only be taken next year after a full analysis of the state’s political situation,” a Trinamool Congress source stated. However, this period of “analysis” comes at a high cost to state accountability. While the Opposition Leader remains non-committal, the state continues to grapple with the contentious roster system, unresolved border disputes, and a crumbling power infrastructure. For the public, a silent opposition effectively grants the government a free pass on critical issues.
Sangma is not the only one hedging his bets. Several sitting MLAs are currently evaluating the political climate before deciding whether to shift loyalties or stick with their current parties.
With the assembly elections just over two years away, political parties have already begun scouting for potential candidates from rival camps.
While the top-tier leadership remains in a state of flux, many MLAs have already shifted into campaign gear. Across various constituencies, representatives are increasingly visible at local programmes and project inspections, attempting to solidify their ground before the inevitable 2025 political realignment.
