TURA, May 20: Several local groups from Pedaldoba in West Garo Hills have strongly opposed the Assam Police’s alleged brazen encroachment into Meghalaya territory under Raksamgre Civil Sub-Division and has shot off a complaint to the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner in this regard.
According to the local groups of which included the GSMC, FKJGP, FAF and CRF, the illegal incursion into Meghalaya territory by the Assam police took place on Tuesday, May 19 where personnel from Rongsai outpost under Goalpara, Assam trespassed into Meghalaya and threatened to shut down shops in the area.
While strongly condemning the incident, the local groups have demanded necessary intervention from concerned authorities in the matter.
“Community elders and local leaders affirm that the original boundary-marked by the Rongsai Bazar bridge, Sapang Pahar, Mangnakopa, Sildubi, and Jolsimina-was historically regarded as the definitive demarcation. According to Samson Geography, a reputable authority on Garo Hills, these villages traditionally fall within Meghalaya’s jurisdiction, with the Jingiram River flowing entirely within Meghalaya. Natural sedimentation, geological shifts, and erosion have further blurred these delineations, inviting encroachments that threaten regional stability,” they felt.
The groups, through their complaint to the Deputy Commissioner, have sought immediate necessary action from authorities of both the respective states, to solve the border dispute at the earliest.
