Kolkata, May 21: Former Trinamool Congress MLA, Aditi Munshi and her husband Debraj Chakraborty on Thursday approached the Calcutta High Court, seeking anticipatory bail on the apprehension that they may be arrested on the charge of disproportionate assets. This is the fear expressed by Aditi Munshi, a former MLA from Rajarhat-Gopalpur and her husband Debraj Chakraborty who is Trinamool councillor in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation.

He was recently detained by police for questioning in a 2021 post-poll violence case. On Thursday, their lawyer drew the attention of the High Court by seeking anticipatory bail in this regard. Justice Joy Sengupta has allowed the filing of a case. The hearing of this case is likely to be held on Friday.

Incidentally, after the change of government in the state, Trinamool leaders are being arrested one after another on corruption charges. In this atmosphere, Aditi and Debraj expressed fear that they may be arrested on the charge of disproportionate assets. It may be noted that Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee made popular devotional singer Aditi Munshi the candidate for Rajarhat-Gopalpur instead of Purnendu Basu in the 2021 Assembly polls. Opposing her was BJP candidate Samik Bhattacharya who is now the state BJP President. Aditi defeated Samik by about 25,000 votes in 2021 became an MLA.

However, many asserted that her husband Debraj was behind Aditi’s victory. Incidentally, Trinamool had nominated Aditi for that seat in this year’s Assembly elections as well. Her husband Debraj was Aditi’s shadow partner in the election campaign. However, Aditi could not retain the seat as she lost to the BJP’s Tarunjyoti Tiwari. Regarding this, the police arrested a person named Amit Chakraborty on Tuesday. He is claimed to be the ‘right-hand man’ of Debraj Chakraborty.

According to police sources, there was an allegation that an attempt was made to stop the BJP’s victory procession on the day of counting of Assembly votes on May 4. Amit was arrested on that charge. In that incident, the police had earlier arrested Samaresh Chakraborty and Hemant Chowdhury, councillors of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. Recently, Debraj Chakraborty was detained in a case of violence after the 2021 Assembly elections results were declared.
