SHILLONG, May 20: Cabinet Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) working president Marcuise N Marak on Wednesday dismissed allegations made by BJP leader Bernard N Marak against the state government and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, terming them “baseless” and “misleading”.
Reacting to accusations that the government was favouring Muslims and claims linking the Chief Minister to an individual accused of triggering law and order disturbances in Garo Hills, Marak said bail in the case had been granted by the court and not by the government.
He questioned how the chief minister could be accused of favouritism when the decision to grant bail rested solely with the judiciary.
Marak maintained that the allegations were unacceptable and intended to mislead the public. He said the executive and judiciary were constitutionally separate entities and that courts function independently of the government.
He added that even the state government itself had several matters pending before courts and had no influence over judicial decisions.
Marak further stated that the judiciary had granted bail based on its own considerations and that the allegations levelled against the chief minister had no basis.
