SHILLONG, May 23: A musical evening was held at the State Convention Hall on Saturday to commemorate 90 years of Akashvani’s service as a public broadcaster.
Jointly organised by Akashvani Shillong and Akashvani North Eastern Services (NES), the event featured Khasi folk songs by Balahpynhun Mawlong and party, Garo folk by the Ahowee band, and Jaintia folk by the Seinraij Art and Culture Group.
The evening also included western music by Shirley Passah and Hindi performances by Ribhakupar Shadap.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Principal Secretary Frederick Roy Kharkongor noted that Akashvani remains a trusted source of information despite the proliferation of digital media.
“It is a major milestone. Akashvani covers more than 90 per cent of the geographical area of India. Amid the many choices that we have in terms of broadcast, print and electronic media, in online media, somehow there is more trust in Akashvani’s news because they provide reliable news,” he said.
Kharkongor also highlighted the impact of the Prime Minister’s Mann Ki Baat, stating that the programme has frequently featured various aspects of Meghalaya.
He praised the broadcaster for providing a platform that allows local talent to reach households across the state.
The event was attended by ICCR Zonal Director Dr. Munish Singh, DDG Admin SK Deohare and Assistant Director (Engineering) Antony War.
