SHILLONG, May 23: The Transport Department has announced that special enforcement drives will soon be intensified across Meghalaya, particularly in border areas and along major transport corridors, as authorities move to crack down on illegal vehicle modifications and widespread violations of transport regulations.
In public notices issued recently, the office of the Commissioner of Transport said several light, medium and heavy goods vehicles have been found operating with unauthorised alterations extending beyond manufacturer-approved dimensions. According to the department, such modifications violate provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
Officials stated that illegal extensions in the length, width and height of vehicles not only breach regulatory norms but also compromise road safety and the structural stability of vehicles. Owners and operators have therefore been directed to restore altered vehicle bodies to their original approved specifications.
The department also instructed owners purchasing chassis-only vehicles for buses and trucks to obtain prior approval from the concerned District Transport Officer before carrying out any body construction work.
Authorities further expressed concern over the increasing number of vehicles operating without mandatory statutory documents, especially in border regions and vulnerable routes. Violations identified include the absence of valid fitness certificates, Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, registration number plates and High Security Registration Plates (HSRP).
Commercial vehicle operators have been directed to ensure that vehicles remain roadworthy and carry valid fitness certification at all times. Drivers have also been instructed to keep essential documents such as registration certificates, insurance papers, driving licences and PUC certificates available for inspection.
The Transport department warned that strict legal action would be initiated against violators, including seizure and detention of vehicles, imposition of penalties and imprisonment wherever applicable under the law.
