SHILLONG, May 24: State BJP vice president and Tura MDC Bernard N. Marak on Saturday alleged that West Garo Hills authorities have failed to register an FIR he submitted regarding the desecration of a statue of Lord Jesus at Chibinang, warning that he will now seek legal recourse.
Marak stated that his complaint, submitted to the Superintendent of Police on April 14, sought action against arson, rioting, and the destruction of property during the violence reported in Chibinang on March 9.
He alleged that a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was vandalised and dragged through the streets during the unrest, yet no formal case has been registered despite the gravity of the accusations.
Describing the inaction as an “anti-Christian act pardoned by the government”, Marak claimed the violence was fueled by inflammatory speeches.
He noted that his complaint specifically named former MLA and MDC Zenith Mominin, but no action has been taken so far.
The Tura MDC further alleged bias in the state’s handling of recent unrest, claiming that while Christian leaders advocating for tribal rights are being jailed under multiple charges, those accused of outraging religious sentiments remain unpunished.
“Where is justice?” Marak questioned, adding that the failure to hold individuals accountable for the desecration of a religious symbol raises serious concerns about the equal application of the law.
Stating that the issue deeply affects religious sentiments and communal harmony, Marak affirmed his decision to approach the judiciary. “I will take the matter to the court,” he said.
The original complaint sought the arrest of those involved under sections related to rioting, unlawful assembly, arson, and criminal conspiracy, alongside offences linked to outraging religious feelings.
