SHILLONG, May 24: The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has congratulated the state government on the historic recognition of Khasi as an official state language and its adoption under the CBSE curriculum, describing the development as a significant milestone in preserving and strengthening the indigenous language, culture and identity of the Khasi people.
HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem in a statement said the recognition marks an important achievement for the state and reflects years of effort by scholars, language activists, writers, social organisations and concerned citizens to promote and preserve the Khasi language.
“The recognition of Khasi as an official state language and its inclusion under the CBSE curriculum is a proud moment for all Hynniewtrep people. It is a major step towards preserving our linguistic and cultural heritage,” Synrem said.
He stated that language is not merely a means of communication but a reflection of the history, heritage and aspirations of a people. He stressed that the achievement should not be seen as the final goal. “The next and more crucial step is to secure the inclusion of Khasi in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India. Such constitutional recognition would provide greater protection and status to the language while opening wider opportunities in education, administration, literature, research and national competitive examinations,” he said.
The HYC urged the state government to actively pursue the matter with the Centre and all concerned authorities to ensure Khasi secures its rightful place in the Eighth Schedule.
Synrem called upon the state government to take proactive and sustained measures to fulfil this long-standing aspiration of the Hynniewtrep people. He reiterated that the HYC remains committed to supporting all initiatives aimed at protecting and strengthening the indigenous language and identity for future generations.
