SHILLONG, May 24: Construction of the Rs 51-crore skywalk at Mawkdok Dympep Valley is 20% complete, with the project expected to be ready for the public by late 2027.
Sohra MLA Gavin Miguel Mylliem on Monday informed that work on the project, aimed at enhancing the tourism experience in the valley, began last year. The skywalk will feature a 40-metre-long walkway, including a seven-metre-wide cantilever section extending over the valley to offer expansive views of the landscape.
The project encompasses 0.54 acres, with a proposed pedestrian deck area of 2,195 square metres.
Additionally, Mylliem announced that infrastructure development at the iconic Nohkalikai Falls has been allotted to a contractor. Work on the Rs 38-crore project is expected to begin soon. The MLA assured that ecological safeguards were factored into the Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for both sites to ensure the surrounding environment remains protected.
Highlighting the economic impact, Mylliem noted that the growing tourism industry in Sohra has provided a vital alternative livelihood for residents who were previously dependent on coal mining.
Mawkdok is already a popular stop on the Sohra circuit, and the upcoming skywalk is expected to further increase tourist footfall and spending in the area.
