15 killed after lorry overturns in central Bangladesh
Dhaka, May 25: At least 15 people were killed and 10 others injured as a lorry loaded with iron rods overturned on a major highway in central Bangladesh early on Monday. “The accident occurred on the eastern side of the Jamuna Bridge that connects northwestern Bangladesh with the central part,” local fire station in charge, Ataur Rahman, told reporters. He said the 10 injured were shifted to a local health facility for treatment with help from the people in neighbouring areas. According to local police, the lorry was also carrying some passengers along with iron rods. The driver lost control of the vehicle, and it overturned in the Kalihati sub-district of Tangail in central Bangladesh. Tangail’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Fauzia Habib Khan, said the lorry or truck was heading toward the northwestern region from the southeastern port city of Chattogram, and the victims might have boarded it from different points on the way during the Eid rush. Rescuers race to reach 7 trapped in Laos cave after flood blocks exit
Bangkok, May 26: Rescuers are racing against time to reach seven people who have been trapped in a cave in central Laos since last week. A group of villagers in the Xaisomboun province went into the cave to look for gold on May 19, but heavy rain triggered flash flooding that blocked the exit, according to Laos and Thai rescue teams involved in the operation. Bounkham Luanglath, who leads the Laos’ Rescue Volunteer for People, said on Monday that one of the people from the group escaped before the exit was blocked and alerted authorities. The status of the seven people who are trapped remains unknown. (AP)
UK hits hottest ever day in May as 32.8 Celsius record broken
London, May 25: The record for the all-time hottest day in the month of May in the UK was beaten on Monday as temperatures crossed 33.5 degrees Celsius, overtaking 32.8 degrees Celsius last recorded in May 1944. The Meteorological (Met) Office expects temperatures to continue to rise over the next couple of hours, making the annual May Bank Holiday Monday for Spring season as the UK’s most sweltering long weekend in years. Over 20 taken to hospital after unknown substance sprayed
Tokyo, May 25: More than 20 people developed sore throats near a luxury department store in Tokyo’s posh Ginza shopping area on Monday after a person allegedly sprayed an unknown substance, Japanese fire department officials said. The Tokyo Fire Department said 26 people complained of suddenly developing throat pain and felt unwell near the Ginza Six shopping complex, and all but one of them were taken to a hospital. Their symptoms were believed to be mild, officials said. Dozens of fire engines and ambulances were parked outside the complex, and the surrounding roads were temporarily closed. Television footage showed firefighters and officials in hazmat suits assisting people, with some being brought out of the building. (AP)
