Guwahati, May 27: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has approved the proposal for appointment of the leader and deputy leader of the Congress Legislative Party in Assam.
Accordingly, senior party leader, Wazed Ali Choudhury has been appointed as leader of the CLP in Assam, while newly-elected MLA from Nowboicha, Joy Prakash Das has been appointed as deputy leader.
The appointments came into effect from Tuesday, according to a statement issued by the party’s general secretary, K.C. Venugopal.
The announcement came in the wake of intense discussions within the party regarding the leadership structure of the Congress Legislature Party in Assam amid the ongoing session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly.
Earlier, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi had informed mediapersons that a final call on the CLP leadership would be taken by the AICC after consultations with party legislators and observers from the central leadership.
Gogoi said the state Congress would abide by the decision of the AICC.
It may be mentioned that the party legislators also held internal meetings here amid growing political interest over the selection of the CLP leader, who is expected to play a key role in shaping the party’s coordination and strategy in the Assembly, including the selection of the Leader of the Opposition.
The Congress had won 19 seats in the Assam Assembly elections.
