Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg has voiced concern over the growing use of artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry, saying AI should only serve as a tool and never replace human creativity.
Speaking on Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson’s IMO podcast, Spielberg said he opposes AI taking creative control in filmmaking, particularly in writing, directing and production design.
The director of classics such as Jaws, E.T., Indiana Jones, Schindler’s List and Lincoln acknowledged that AI could be useful in areas like medical research, logistics and location scouting.
However, he stressed that creativity requires human emotion and soul, something he believes technology cannot replicate.
Spielberg said he does not believe AI possesses sentience and warned against allowing algorithms to dictate dialogue, camera placement or set design.
While he sees AI as a tool that can reduce technical workload, he insisted it should never become the “final word” in creative decisions.
His comments come as major Hollywood studios increasingly adopt AI to reduce production costs.
Amazon MGM Studios and Paramount are already experimenting with AI-generated content, while actors and filmmakers including Leonardo DiCaprio, Scarlett Johansson and Cate Blanchett have also criticised the trend. (PTI)
