SHILLONG, May 28: Following strict enforcement by the Ri-Bhoi police along the national highway (NH), stunt bikers and reckless riders seem to have shifted their activities to the upcoming New Shillong Township (NST).
Reports indicate that numerous two-wheeler riders now gather on the Ummir-Mawkhanu road on Sundays to perform dangerous manoeuvres. The location has become a preferred spot due to its sparse population and minimal vehicular movement, coupled with wide roads that are still under construction.
Previously, these riders were a regular fixture on the Shillong-Guwahati road, where their dangerous riding posed a significant risk to themselves and other commuters.
However, continuous surveillance and rigorous checking by Ri-Bhoi authorities have successfully curbed such activities on the busy highway.
With the traditional route now under heavy police watch, the quiet stretches of the New Shillong Township have emerged as a new hub for those seeking speed and thrills, raising fresh safety concerns for the developing area.
