Gulveer becomes first Indian to run a mile in sub-four minutes

CLEVELAND (USA), May 30: Star Indian long distance runner Gulveer Singh became the first Indian to run a mile race in less than four minutes enroute to winning the title at the 24th Annual Music City Track Carnival here.The World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger event was organised at Lee University Cleveland Campus in the USA.The 27-year-old Singh, an Asian Games bronze medallist in the men’s 10,000m, clocked a creditable time of 3:55.63 seconds to win the men’s 1 Mile Pro event on Saturday.Christopher Knight, representing the USA, was second with a time of 3:59.72 and Tristan Trevino, also of the USA, was third with a time of 4:00.27s.Singh is currently training and competing in the USA for the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Asian Games in Japan.The army runner is also the first Indian to break the 13-minute barrier for the 5,000m track race.His national men’s 5,000m indoor record is 12:59.77 seconds set last year in the USA. The versatile distance runner also holds the men’s 10,000m national track record of 27:00.22s. (PTI)

Indian women bag 10 medals at U17 Asian Wrestling C’ships

DA NANG (Vietnam), May 30: ndia’s women wrestlers delivered a flawless performance at the U17 Asian Wrestling Championships 2026 in Da Nang, Vietnam, securing a 100% podium finish with an impressive haul of 10 medals — 2 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze.Diksha (43kg) and Garima (73kg) led the charge, clinching gold medals with dominant victories in their respective finals, underlining India’s growing strength at the youth level.India added three silver medals through Nikita (49kg), Antra (65kg) and Taniya (69kg). Taniya finished runner-up after a hard-fought final against Khadisha Flyuk, while Nikita and Antra also settled for silver medals after losing their respective title bouts.The bronze medal tally featured Palak (40kg), Anamika (46kg), Akshra (53kg), Sakshi (57kg) and Manya (61kg), all of whom secured podium finishes with strong performances.Palak defeated Aruuke Nurbekovna Nurbekova, Anamika overcame Inzhu Bakkozha, Akshra beat Ema Arakawa, Sakshi got the better of Shiying Wang, and Manya defeated Aigerim Polatbay in their respective bronze medal bouts.The impressive medal haul highlights India’s depth and consistency in women’s wrestling at the age-group level, reinforcing its status as a dominant force in Asian wrestling. 15-year-old Nousheen scores brace as India pip Malaysia 2-1

KAKAMIGAHARA (Japan), May 30: Fifteen-year-old Nousheen Naz struck twice as India made a winning start, beating Malaysia 2-1 in a pool A game of the U-18 women’s Asia Cup hockey championship here on Saturday.After a goalless first quarter, India ended the deadlock in the 19th minute off a penalty corner, when Nousheen capitalised on an opportunity during a set-piece to place the ball into the net and give her side a 1-0 lead.Nousheen struck again in the second quarter. In the 28th minute, she beat Malaysian goalkeeper with a sharp shot to double India’s lead to 2-0 before the hooter signalled half-time.Malaysia looked to recover in the second half and eventually managed to cut India’s lead down to one goal in the 41st minute, as Nur Azli breached the Indian post to reduce the margin to 2-1.The Indian defence kept the opposition from causing further damage in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.India created several scoring opportunities throughout the match and earned a total of 16 penalty corners.Nousheen was named ‘Player of the Match’ for her two goals, which proved to be the difference.With this win, India are currently placed second in Pool A behind Korea. Both teams have three points each but are separated by goal’s difference.India will play Korea in their next pool match on Sunday. (PTI)
