SHILLONG, June 2: Meghalaya has completed the construction of 1,58,903 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G), with another 25,395 units currently under construction.
A total of 1,84,298 beneficiaries have been identified across the state for the scheme, which is implemented by the State Rural Employment Society (SRES). Officials stated that the current pace of construction has surpassed the volume of work completed over the last decade, and the remaining houses are expected to be finished within the next three months.
Under PMAY-G, financial assistance of Rs 1.30 lakh per unit is shared between the Centre and the State in a 90:10 ratio. The funds are released in three instalments: an initial Rs 52,000, followed by Rs 68,000 during the secondary construction phase, and a final Rs 10,000 upon completion. Each stage is verified through geo-tagging.
While the government encountered challenges regarding land availability in certain areas, officials said the issue was resolved by coordinating with local communities, Block Development Officers (BDOs), and Deputy Commissioners to identify suitable land for the project.
