Kathmandu, June 3: Nepal’s National Assembly was adjourned on Wednesday after opposition lawmakers continued to protest Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s remarks on the country’s border dispute with India.
National Assembly Chairman Narayan Prasad Dahal suspended proceedings until June 9 as opposition members demanded that Shah apologise, withdraw his statement and remove it from parliamentary records.
The controversy began after Shah, popularly known as Balen, said on Sunday that Nepal had also encroached on Indian territory in several places. He further suggested that India and Nepal had agreed to seek assistance from historians, surveyors and experts to resolve the dispute. India rejected any role for third parties, insisting that boundary issues should be settled bilaterally.
The disruption prevented Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle from presenting the government’s fiscal 2026-27 budget estimates in the Upper House.
The Lower House was also adjourned earlier this week. Nepal and India continue to dispute the Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura and Kalapani regions along their shared border. (PTI)
