Kolkata, June 4: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday said the state government is considering carving out a separate shipping wing from the transport department and exploring the development of minor ports on the lines of Gujarat and Odisha.
Addressing a press conference at the state secretariat after a meeting with Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, Adhikari said the government was keen on strengthening maritime infrastructure and inland water transport in the state. Union Minister of State for Shipping, Ports Shantanu Thakur was also present at the meeting.
“Currently, the transport and shipping departments function together in the state. We are considering creating a separate shipping wing in the future. We are also examining the possibility of developing minor ports on the lines of states such as Gujarat and Odisha,” Adhikari said.
The CM said work on the proposed deep-sea port project would move ahead on land identified at Dadanpatrabar, around 10 km from Tajpur. (PTI)
