TURA, June 5: West Garo Hills (WGH) Police on Thursday arrested five of the main accused in connection with the alleged murder of ACHIK member, Dilseng M Sangma, in January.
The main accused — Sofiul Sheikh, Md Basirul Islam, Motidur Hussain, Saddam Hussain, and Mofid Zaman — had been absconding for five months after allegedly committing the crime.
The arrest of the five main accused swelled the number of those arrested to 25 with police sources asserting that a charge-sheet into the case would be filed within a month.
On January 9, Sangma, along with other members were attacked by a mob near the village of Goalgaon in West Garo Hills after they were returning from inspection of stone quarrying sites. The attack left two members critical with Dilseng succumbing to his injuries while getting medical attention. The case was filed under Rajabala police station.
His death led to a huge furore leading to clashes and a major flashpoint in the region which only was doused after arrests were made into the case through comprehensive efforts by the district police.
