TOKYO, June 5: Typhoon Jangmi left a trail of destruction across Japan after making landfall on June 3, bringing torrential rain, powerful winds, flooding and landslides.
The storm struck the Kanto and Tokai regions and also impacted Okinawa, Kyushu and Shikoku, causing extensive damage to homes, roads and other infrastructure.
Rivers burst their banks in several areas, forcing authorities to issue flood warnings and evacuation advisories.
More than 1.6 million residents across Tokyo, Kanagawa and Chiba prefectures were urged to evacuate.
Mie Prefecture recorded exceptionally heavy rainfall, with Owase City receiving a record 535.5 mm of rain in 24 hours. Central Tokyo experienced its highest June rainfall on record over a 12-hour period, leading to submerged roads and rapidly rising rivers.
Although the typhoon has passed, officials continue to warn of landslides, flooding and other hazards due to saturated ground and unstable slopes. (Agencies)
