Madrid, June 6: Reigning European champions Spain appear the strongest side in Group H of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Cabo Verde will all believe they can challenge for a place in the knockout stages.

Spain

The team: Spain head to the United States as one of the favourites to lift the trophy after winning the European Championship. Luis de la Fuente’s side combines midfield control through Rodri and Martin Zubimendi with attacking flair from Pedri, Nico Williams and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.
Goalkeeper Unai Simon provides experience, while Pau Cubarsi has emerged as a key figure in defence. The main concern for Spain is the fitness of Williams and Yamal, who are recovering from hamstring injuries.
Star player: Yamal has become one of world football’s brightest stars. Blessed with pace, creativity and an eye for goal, the youngster is expected to be one of the standout performers of the tournament.
Player to watch: Marcos Llorente’s versatility and energy make him a valuable asset. Whether in midfield or defence, the Atletico Madrid player offers pace, strength and attacking support down the flank.

Uruguay

The team: Under Marcelo Bielsa, Uruguay remain one of the most competitive teams in international football. Their trademark high-pressing style can trouble any opponent, while defenders Ronald Araujo and Jose Gimenez provide solidity at the back.
Much will depend on striker Darwin Nunez, who has seen limited game time since joining Al-Hilal.
Star player: Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde is the driving force of the side. His energy, leadership and ability to influence matches at both ends of the pitch make him indispensable.
Player to watch: Winger Brian Rodriguez has developed into a dangerous attacking weapon and could provide the creativity needed to unlock stubborn defences.

Saudi Arabia

The team: Saudi Arabia proved their ability to upset the odds by defeating Argentina at the 2022 World Cup. However, a difficult qualifying campaign led to a coaching change, with Georgios Donis replacing Herve Renard.
The Saudis possess talent but will need greater consistency if they are to challenge for qualification. Star player: Salem Al-Dawsari remains the team’s biggest threat. The Al-Hilal winger was instrumental in the famous win over Argentina and continues to be Saudi Arabia’s most influential player.
Player to watch: Saleh Al Shehri brings more than goals to the side, providing a physical presence and helping link play in the final third.

Cabo Verde

The team: Cabo Verde arrive as outsiders but earned respect by finishing ahead of Cameroon in qualifying. Coach Bubista has built a disciplined side around a strong defence that kept seven clean sheets during qualification.
Star player: Veteran striker Ryan Mendes captains the team and is Cabo Verde’s all-time leading scorer with 22 international goals.
Player to watch: Benfica full-back Sidny Lopes Cabral offers pace, attacking intent and valuable top-level experience despite being only 23 years old. (IANS)
