Houston, June 7: For most members of the Curaçao squad, stepping onto the field for their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 match against Germany on June 14 will be a landmark moment. For winger Tahith Chong, however, the occasion will carry even deeper significance.
The 26-year-old is the only player in Curaçao’s World Cup squad who was born on the Caribbean island, making his participation in the country’s maiden appearance at football’s biggest tournament especially meaningful.
Chong spent much of his childhood in Curaçao before moving to the Netherlands in pursuit of a professional football career. He initially represented the Netherlands at youth level, but when the time came to choose his senior international future, he opted to play for the nation of his birth.
The decision has already paid dividends. After making his senior debut for Curaçao in 2025, Chong played an important role in helping the team secure qualification for their first-ever World Cup.
Now, with Curaçao preparing to face Germany, Côte d’Ivoire and Ecuador in Group E, Chong is eager to showcase both his footballing ability and the spirit of his homeland on the global stage.Reflecting on his decision to represent Curaçao, Chong said the choice felt natural because of his strong emotional connection to the island.
According to the winger, Curaçao has always felt like home despite his move to Europe at a young age. He revealed that he continues to visit the island whenever possible and still maintains close ties with family and friends there.
Chong recalled playing football in Curaçao as a child before relocating to the Netherlands. One of his most memorable moments came when he started a match for the national team on home soil after making his debut away from home in Trinidad and Tobago.
The occasion was particularly special because many members of his family were able to watch him play live for the first time.
Among them was his grandmother, who attended one of his matches despite being 96 years old. Chong described the experience as one of the most cherished moments of his career. (Agencies)
