Actor and politician Kangana Ranaut has spoken out against what she described as society’s unfair treatment of nurses, saying the profession is often stereotyped and sexualised despite the critical role nurses play in healthcare.
Speaking about her upcoming film Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata, Kangana said the project aims to change public perceptions and encourage greater respect for nurses and other frontline hospital workers.
Inspired by the true story of the staff of Mumbai’s Cama Hospital during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, the film highlights the courage of nurses, ward boys and support staff who helped save more than 400 lives during the crisis.
Kangana, who plays a staff nurse in the film, said healthcare workers are often underpaid, overworked and underappreciated despite carrying out some of the most demanding responsibilities in hospitals.
She noted that while doctors rightly receive recognition for their contributions, society often overlooks the millions of workers who keep hospitals functioning every day.
According to Kangana, nurses, ward boys, watchmen and other support staff form the backbone of healthcare institutions, yet rarely receive the respect they deserve.
She said the film seeks to draw attention to these unsung heroes and inspire audiences to value their work more highly.
The actor also highlighted the bravery displayed by hospital employees during the 26/11 attacks, recalling that members of the Cama Hospital staff played a key role in identifying terrorist Ajmal Kasab.
She said their courage and commitment to the country remained remarkable despite the trauma they experienced.
Kangana further explained the significance of the film’s title, saying it was inspired by a phrase used by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to describe workers whose efforts contribute to the nation’s progress.
She said the title resonated with the filmmakers because it reflects the importance of ordinary workers who often go unnoticed.
The recently released trailer portrays the extraordinary actions of everyday hospital employees during a moment of national crisis and underscores how essential their contributions are to society.
Presented by PEN Studios and produced by PEN Studios, Manikarnika Films and Paramhans Creations, the film is scheduled to release in theatres on June 12, 2026. (ANI)
