SHILLONG, June 7: A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Punakha, Bhutan, at 11.06 pm on Sunday, sending strong tremors across Guwahati, Shillong and other parts of Northeast India.
The National Centre for Seismology noted that the quake originated at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometres, causing buildings to sway for several seconds in the region.
Local residents in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Shillong and parts of Arunachal Pradesh reported feeling the sudden jolt, leading many to panic and rush out into open spaces.
No immediate injuries or major infrastructure damages have been reported in Guwahati, Shillong or any other part of the Northeast.
Local authorities are assessing the situation, and geological experts have advised citizens to remain cautious as mild aftershocks are common following any shallow event in the Himalayan seismic belt.
