Harjit Singh tops men’s 100m race in Indian Athletics Series
Pune, June 7: Air Force sprinter Harjit Singh hogged the limelight as he clocked 10.17 seconds to top the field in the men’s 100m race in the eighth leg of the Indian Athletics Series here on Sunday. Maharashtra’s Rushiprasad Desai finished second with a time of 10.35 seconds while Laurie Anant Melge was third clocking 10.36 seconds. Maharashtra continued to garner success as Aditya Pisal clocked 10.23 seconds in U-20 men’s 100m. Reliance’s Yashas P clocked 46.82 seconds to win the men’s 400m while Tushar Kanti Manna (47.19s) and Shubham D (47.74s) claimed second and third. In women’s 100m, Karnataka’s Prakruthi Roopa finished first with 11.65 seconds while Uttar Pradesh’s Nipam clocked 11.69s for a second place and Delhi’s Charu Shoukeen finished third with 12.06s. Maharashtra’s Aishwarya Mishra finished first in women’s 400m with 54.22s, Haryana’s Manisha A clocked 54.66s to end up on second while Rajasthan’s Geeta finished third with 54.72s. (PTI)
India lead World Yogasana C’ships with 40 gold medals
Ahmedabad, June 7: Gujarat’s Heena Rajgor led India’s gold medal rush as the hosts extended their lead on the table on the penultimate day of the inaugural World Yogasana Championships here on Sunday. India stood at the top of the medals tally with 50 medals, including 40 gold, eight silver and two bronze. Japan added two gold to go up to three and 10 overall and they are second on the table, while Singapore are third with six medals, including a couple of gold medals. Rajgor, who hails from Bhuj in Gujarat, dominated the Forward Bend competition in Senior B Female category to clinch the gold medal with 43.50 points. Oman’s Preeti Jaimani won the silver with 38.15 points, while Svetlana Lukashova of Russia and Maya Al Alostath of Jordan shared the bronze. While the Indians expectedly dominated the gold medal race, Japan added two gold while Russia and Uzbekistan grabbed a gold each. Hisashi Watanabe (Supine Individual Senior B Male) and Tomoka Shimizu (Leg Balance Individual Senior C Female) bagged the gold medals for Japan, while Svetlana Lukashova won the senior B female category in Supine Individual for Russia. Kamolatdin Rakhmanov clinched Uzbekistan’s first gold medal of the Championships in Leg Balance Individual Senior C Male category. (PTI)
Animesh wins silver in 200m in Taipei City
Taipei City, June 7: National record holder Animesh Kujur finished second in the men’s 200m with the fourth fastest time of career at the New Taipei City Athletics Open 2026 here on Sunday. The 23-year-old Indian, whose national record stands at 20.32 seconds, clocked a solid 20.47seconds. Animesh has also run 20.40 seconds and 20.45 seconds last year, and thus his effort on Sunday was his fourth fastest time. Thailand’s Puripol Boonson ran a lifetime best of 20.03 seconds to finish on top and become the joint third-fastest Asian man of all time over the 200m. (PTI)
Strong wind at NCAA baseball tournament sends 5 to hospital
Morgantown (US), June 7: Five people were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained when a strong wind tore through an area occupied by fans at the Morgantown Super Regional NCAA baseball tournament game between West Virginia and Cal Poly on Saturday, according to the university. Video from the storm showed rain and wind that reached speeds of 40 mph tearing up a tent, with one person flying through the air while trying to hold it down as another person rolls uncontrollably down a hill.
