New Chandigarh, June 8: Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar etched his name into the Indian cricket record books with a stunning six-wicket haul on Test debut against Afghanistan, registering the third-best innings figures by an Indian bowler in his maiden Test appearance.
The 23-year-old returned figures of 6 for 33 in Afghanistan’s second innings, playing a pivotal role in India’s crushing innings-and-300-run victory in New Chandigarh. His performance not only earned him the Player of the Match award but also placed him alongside some of the finest debutants in Indian Test history.
Only Narendra Hirwani and Ravichandran Ashwin have produced better bowling figures for India on Test debut. Hirwani’s extraordinary 8 for 61 against the West Indies in Chennai in 1988 remains the benchmark, while the leg-spinner also claimed 8 for 75 in the same match. Ashwin occupies fourth place on the list with 6 for 47 against the West Indies in Delhi in 2011.Suthar’s effort pushed him ahead of several notable Indian bowlers, including Syed Abid Ali, Dilip Doshi, Mohammed Shami, Axar Patel and Amit Mishra, all of whom enjoyed memorable starts to their Test careers. What made Suthar’s spell particularly impressive was the control and discipline he displayed on a pitch offering assistance to the spinners.
Bowling stump-to-stump and repeatedly attacking the same areas, he dismantled Afghanistan’s batting line-up and ensured that his debut would be remembered as one of the finest by an Indian bowler. The performance also continued India’s rich tradition of producing match-winning bowlers on debut. From Mohammad Nissar’s 5 for 93 against England at Lord’s in 1932 to Ashwin’s heroics nearly eight decades later, Indian cricket has often witnessed young bowlers making an immediate impact at the highest level. With a seven-wicket match haul and a place among the country’s most successful Test debutants, Suthar has announced his arrival in style.
His exploits against Afghanistan suggest India may have unearthed another promising spin talent for the future.Whether Suthar can build on this dream beginning remains to be seen, but history suggests that a memorable debut often serves as a springboard rather than a destination. Several bowlers on this elite list went on to enjoy distinguished international careers, while others struggled to replicate their early success. For Suthar, the challenge now will be to maintain the consistency, discipline and patience that made him so effective against Afghanistan. Yet, at a time when Indian cricket continues to search for its next generation of match-winners, the Rajasthan spinner has already given selectors and fans plenty of reasons for optimism. By placing himself alongside the likes of Hirwani and Ashwin in the record books, Suthar has not only made an unforgettable first impression but also taken the first significant step towards establishing himself as a long-term force in India’s rich spin-bowling tradition.
