SHILLONG, June 9: The High Court of Meghalaya on Tuesday disposed of an appeal by St. Edmund’s School, Shillong, after the school and the parents of a five-year-old student reached an amicable settlement over the child’s KG admission. The court set aside its earlier single-judge order of May 22, 2026, and noted that the child has been readmitted as a regular student from June 8, and directed that all related legal proceedings, social media posts and publications be withdrawn in the child’s larger interest.
The parents tendered an unconditional apology to the school authorities and undertook to remove all social media posts related to the matter. They also assured that they would request news agencies to take down publications connected to the incident.
The appeal, filed by the school had challenged a single-judge order dated May 22, which had quashed the school’s forfeiture and cancellation of the child’s KG admission for the 2026 session. During the hearing on Tuesday, the bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Biswadeep Bhattacharjee was told that the dispute had been resolved between the parties.
According to the order, the child was admitted back to St. Edmund’s School as a regular student from June 8, 2026, and the parents tendered an unconditional apology to the school authorities.
The school assured that the child and his parents would be treated like any other students and parents.
The court also recorded the school’s assurance that the child’s absence since the start of the academic session would not hinder promotion to Standard I.
Taking note of the involvement of a young child, the bench directed that all court records, including any YouTube proceedings if recorded, be kept confidential and not made available for public dissemination.
