CAIRO, June 11: At least 15 people were killed and dozens injured in overnight drone strikes carried out by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the central city of el-Obeid, health officials said on Thursday.
The attacks targeted several locations, including areas near an army position, a cemetery during a funeral gathering and a gas station. Some of the wounded were reported to be in critical condition.
According to the Sudan Doctors Network, four people were killed when drones struck mourners at a cemetery. A local aid monitoring group, Emergency Lawyers, said homes near military headquarters and a truck carrying food supplies were also hit, killing the driver. The group warned that the death toll could rise as drones continued to fly over the city.
Humanitarian workers reported that drone attacks have intensified in recent days, disrupting daily life in el-Obeid. Schools have suspended classes, markets are operating only partially, and aid operations have been affected.
Sudan’s civil war, which began in April 2023 between the army and the RSF, has killed at least 59,000 people, displaced around 13 million and pushed large parts of the country into famine. Drone warfare has emerged as one of the deadliest threats to civilians, with both sides reportedly receiving support from foreign countries.
The conflict continues to divide Sudan, with the army controlling much of the north, east and centre, while the RSF holds much of Darfur and parts of Kordofan. (AP)
