The Stolen Trophy and a Hero Dog

In 1966, the solid-gold Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen in London while on public display. A massive police hunt yielded nothing, until a dog named “Pickles” sniffed out the trophy completely wrapped in old newspaper, hidden under a bush in a suburban garden. Pickles instantly became a national hero, earning a medal and free food for life.
Pickles’ newfound fame extended far beyond football circles. He appeared at public events and was invited to numerous celebrations. The heroic collie even featured in films and television productions. His owner, David Corbett, suddenly found himself in the spotlight as journalists from around the world sought interviews. The story became even more magical later that year. On July 30, 1966, England defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley Stadium.Captain Bobby Moore proudly lifted the very trophy that Pickles had helped recover. For English football supporters, it remains the greatest moment in the nation’s sporting history.
