PHILADELPHIA, June 13: Ecuador and Ivory Coast will meet at Lincoln Financial Field on Monday in what is expected to be one of the most significant fixtures of the opening round of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
With Germany widely regarded as favourites to top Group E, both Ecuador and Ivory Coast know that a positive result could prove crucial in the race for qualification to the knockout stages.
The match marks Ivory Coast’s return to the World Cup after a 12-year absence. The three-time African champions last appeared at the global showpiece in 2014, when a defeat to Greece ended their campaign in Brazil. They subsequently failed to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 editions.Led by head coach Emerse Fae, the Elephants will be aiming to reach the knockout rounds for the first time in their history. Despite recording victories in each of their previous World Cup appearances, Ivory Coast have never progressed beyond the group stage. The expanded tournament format offers fresh hope, with some third-placed teams also advancing to the next round. As a result, Sunday’s encounter could have a major bearing on the group’s final standings.
Ivory Coast head into the contest on the back of a four-match winning streak but face a stern challenge against an Ecuador side that has not lost a match in two years.
Since a narrow defeat to Brazil in Sebastian Beccacece’s first game in charge, Ecuador have put together a 19-match unbeaten run across competitive and friendly fixtures. (Agencies)
