Iran deal, UFC fight highlight Trump’s 80th birthday

WASHINGTON, June 15: US President Donald Trump marked his 80th birthday on Sunday with a combination of diplomacy and spectacle, celebrating a preliminary agreement aimed at ending the US-Iran conflict while hosting a major UFC mixed martial arts event on the White House South Lawn.
Hours before the fights began, Trump announced that a deal with Iran had been completed and said it would pave the way for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the end of the US blockade in the region. The move, if finalised, could help stabilise global energy markets and ease concerns over rising oil prices. However, significant details of the agreement remain unresolved, and negotiations are expected to continue before it is formally signed.
The UFC event attracted more than 4,000 invited guests and featured a temporary arena erected on White House grounds. Senior administration officials, Republican leaders and foreign dignitaries attended the event, including Polish President Karol Nawrocki.
UFC president Dana White, a close ally of Trump, described it as a unique occasion. Trump and White appeared together before the crowd, which chanted patriotic slogans as fighter jets flew overhead.
The celebration highlighted Trump’s close relationship with UFC and his preference for high-profile public events. Supporters viewed the occasion as a showcase of American strength and confidence, while critics argued it diverted attention from challenges facing the administration, including public concerns about the Iran conflict, inflation and falling approval ratings.
The weekend also featured controversy. Workers removed Trump’s name from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts after a court ruling, while UFC fighter Sean Strickland was escorted from the event area under unclear circumstances.
Questions about Trump’s age and health also resurfaced. Having become the oldest person elected US president, he faces increasing scrutiny over his physical and mental fitness. The White House dismissed such concerns, citing statements from former presidential physician and Congressman Ronny Jackson, who praised Trump’s stamina and focus. The birthday event ultimately blended foreign policy, entertainment and political symbolism in a manner characteristic of Trump’s presidency. (AP)
