SHILLONG, June 17: The state government will soon initiate the tender process for the long-planned beautification of Ward’s Lake, Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira announced on Wednesday.
The project aims to transform the iconic landmark by improving water clarity, installing a modern lighting system and enhancing the surrounding landscape.
According to the tourism minister, the construction of a new steel gate is nearing completion, after which the larger beautification works will commence at Ward’s Lake.
Under the proposed plan, a private firm will be contracted to perform a comprehensive, chemical-free clean-up and oxygenation of the lake. The goal is to achieve crystal-clear water similar to the Umngot River in Dawki.
The selected company will also be responsible for the lake’s maintenance for a period of 10 years.
The government has earmarked Rs 7.3 crore for the general beautification and Rs 4 crore, specifically for a new light and sound show.
The entire cleaning and installation process is estimated to take eight months. Authorities clarified that the lake will remain open to pedestrians while the work is in progress.
In addition to the water treatment, the stone pathways encircling the lake will be upgraded.
